58 years of age, vegetarian/vegan and healthy - eating rightly, I worked out every single day. Never thought cancer would strike me!
Growing up, my doctor told me that with dense breast tissue like mine, it was important that I get a mammogram yearly after the age of 50. I followed the advice.
In 2014, I was told all was well and I could actually go for mammogram every other year. Around that time I learnt about someone whose cancer didn’t get diagnosed by mammogram.
It wasn’t too long when I faced the same situation - I was sent for an ultrasound when my doctor suspected something. The mammogram had not detected the cancer!
I didn't want to share this news - my colleagues at work didn’t know until it was time for my surgery. It wasn’t over yet - there was more once the treatment ended. Only after a year, my uterus wall had thickened which was probably a side effect from the medication. The medication was supposed to block the estrogen from going to the breast, it was redirected to the uterus and could have led to uterus cancer. Needless to say, I was good due to timely diagnosis.
It's been 5 years now and I'm very grateful for everything. I have deep faith and continue to exercise daily ,eat organic foods and take supplements. I also try to control the estrogen from my food intake.
Speaking from my own experience, I learnt how much my inner voice guided me to have an ultrasound as well as a mammogram . If it wasn’t for my own instincts, I wouldn’t have gone that path!
